Columnar basalt form in Icelandic architecture.

Columnar basalt (icelandic: stuĂ°laberg) is rock that during rapid cooling has fractured into columns that most often are hexagonal. Columnar basalt often forms beautiful sights in Icelandic nature. For example as backdrops in waterfalls. The forms of the columnar basalt has been frequent inspiration in Icelandic architecture.
